WHO ARE WE?

Who are we? HELP for Haiti is a 501C3 nonprofit organization committed to helping the people of Haiti through education.  Our group was inspired by the life and commitment of the late Coleman ‘Coley’ and Anna Gorham, two educators from the State of Maine, who spent 20+ years of their retirement doing mission work in Haiti.   Coley and his wife both passed on in 2020. Coley lived to be 102 years old. I am so pleased to say that he entrusted his vision to some of the members of his support group, and we, in turn, expanded this group and formalized a legal fundraising organization led by motivated, compassionate executives who are willing to commit time and energy to give back on a global level.  Our team was formed with the goal of seeing the Gorhams’ vision come to life – Educated Haitians making positive impacts in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

What do we do?  Our organization provides support to young adults in Haiti to gain access to colleges, universities, and trade schools through fund raising and partnerships with educational institutions and other organizations of interest.  Coley Gorham made many trips to Haiti throughout the years.  During those experiences, his vision became crystal clear; Haitians needed education to create a better future for their country.  As an outgrowth of this vision, HELP for Haiti is poised to make a significant impact through educational donations to the most needy population in the western hemisphere.

Why Should You Support HELP for Haiti?  HELP for Haiti has built a significant network of Haitian nationals on the ground to execute the organizations plans.    Many of these are volunteers or recipients of English educational services from Coley Gorham’s original St. Patrick Youth Center built in Petite Riviere de Nippes, Haiti, aka Ti Riviere.  Directors of our Board have visited Haiti, built relationships with locals, and have seen first-hand the impact that employment of just one person can make on a family in Haiti. In addition, our organization supports educational opportunities for both women and men, and we evaluate each student; choosing only those who can be successful in a rigorous educational program leading to strong employment opportunities.

How Can You Help?   HELP for Haiti needs financial support! Every young adult who receives an educational donation or sponsorship from our organization requires a financial commitment. Our goal is to expand the number of donations each year to help educate the youth in Haiti, which will impact more families, more communities and ultimately, the country in general.

Why Can You Trust HELP for Haiti? We vigorously screen our volunteers and support personnel.  Our partnerships in Haiti were built on years of interaction, and our board members are reputable members of our community.  Our board members and volunteers were not seeking to build a nonprofit for a global cause, but instead came to this calling as an unintended consequence of exposure to the needs in Haiti through the work of the Gorhams.
We witness every day the effect of hope in the world! HELP for Haiti can be your vehicle to help others to help themselves.  Please consider HELP for Haiti in your philanthropy efforts.

HELP for Haiti and Thrive Ansanm Partner Together! 2024

When Coleman “Coley” Gorham first visited Haiti in 1998 at the age of 80 years old, he could have easily concluded that he was too old to travel to a politically unstable and underdeveloped country. But after watching a video of the poor conditions in Haiti, he felt compelled to go there, and see for himself. His heart was forever changed when he saw the extreme poverty, the hopelessness, and the many children who wanted so desperately to go to school, but their families had no resources to send them. He knew that he had to do something to make a difference.

With his wife Anna by his side, Coley dedicated the next twenty years to helping Haiti. After the completion of multiple projects, Coley still felt as though his work there was unfinished. He had a big vision, the dream of helping young Haitians access higher education at colleges, trade schools and universities. At this time, Coley was nearly 100 years old, his health was failing, and he came to the conclusion that perhaps he had done all that he could do.

In Honor of Coleman ‘Coley’ and Anna Gorham

Coleman and Anna Gorham both passed away in 2020. They were laid to rest this summer, in 2021, in Portland, Maine. Higher Education and Leadership Program for Haiti was greatly inspired by the relentless work of Coleman ‘Coley’ Gorham. He and Anna’s long journey of love and dedication to the people of Haiti will never be forgotten. Coley and Anna believed that education had the power to change lives, communities, and ultimately, countries. Coley’s vision for Haiti was a big one! He believed the answer was to educate the youth in order to create leaders for the future of Haiti.

HELP for Haiti is committed to carry Coley’s torch into the future with great respect, honor, and determined pursuit!

RIP Coley and Anna. You are forever in our hearts!

Nursing Cap Ceremony

Higher Education and Leadership Program for Haiti would like to congratulate Marie Darling Dacila on her Nursing Cap Ceremony! She will be attending the Institut Superieur d’études Paramedicales in the Department of Nippes, Fond des négres.

I am honored to introduce Marie Darling as one of our four students. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to become a nurse, something she only dreamed of doing for a long time. Our organization is all about making dreams come true for the youth in Haiti, who otherwise, would never have the chance!

HELP for Haiti will be accepting at least 4 new students this fall. More to come on this!

Did you know that a FOUR-YEAR college education in Haiti only costs between $5000-$8000 depending on the school/career of choice? Trade Schools (2-Yr)programs are much less and just as important!

If anyone is interested in learning more or would like to get involved with our organization please see our contact information.

If you’d like to make a donation, you can do this on this website!

HELP for Haiti is always looking for volunteers to join our mission. Please contact us at helphaitithruedu@gmail.com if you are interested.

We are so excited about the progress we’ve made and we plan to help many more students in Haiti to have the opportunity to go to college and make their dreams come true!
